A scandal over the placement of a flag at a news conference by the opposition spiraled further out of control Tuesday for Syria's opposition, with catastrophic political consequences for a veteran dissident. In Istanbul, Khaled Khoja, the head of the opposition-in-exile National Coalition, apologized for allowing the independence, or "rebel," flag, to be moved several meters to the side during a news conference the previous day.The incident took place during a joint news conference between Khoja and Louay Hussein, a veteran dissident and until recently a prominent figure in the so-called "tolerated opposition".The initiative, which was accepted by Khoja, went awry when no regime flag could be found in Istanbul, requiring that the independence flag be moved to the side, Hussein said.Hussein and Ghanem are both Alawites.
