Militants from ISIS stormed Damascus' Palestinian neighborhood of Yarmouk Wednesday and took over "wide areas" of the devastated, besieged area from rebel fighters.Anti-regime activists said ISIS militants appeared to be gaining the upper hand in Yarmouk after fierce, daylong clashes with a local militia, Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis, made up of Palestinians and Syrians.The ISIS militants entered Yarmouk from the nearby neighborhood of Hajar Al-Aswad, where they had been holed up for months after being expelled last year from most of the Damascus suburbs by the Islam Army rebel militia, based in Eastern Ghouta.If ISIS manages to gain control of Yarmouk it will be the closest that the group has come to the capital.An anti-regime activist in the Damascus suburbs told The Daily Star that the repercussions of the Hamas official's assassination were likely a "pretext" for ISIS' move against Yarmouk, where dozens have died of hunger and medical problems resulting from a brutal siege by regime forces since mid-2013 . An Islam Army spokesman said late Wednesday that his group's fighters had clashed with ISIS militants, but did not elaborate.
